But the latest star to have jumped on the emoji bandwagon doesn’t have Snapchat – and is 94 years old. Design icon Iris Apfel, who graced Dazed’s Art Special cover back in 2012, is launching her own set of emojis in September. The interior designer has long been considered one of the most original people in fashion. She has been the subject of a Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition, and a documentary by Albert Maysles exploring the meticulous way she curates the visual space around her. While the emojis themselves are yet to be revealed, it will be interesting to see what she brings to the cartoon world of emojis. The keyboard comes in conjunction with her upcoming mod-inspired clothing and accessories line, designed in partnership with Macy’s I.N.C. It’s not the first time Apfel has shown how up-to-date she is – she’s previously collaborated with wearables brand WiseWear, producing a small collection of tech-integrated jewellery, designed with her signature bold geometrics and unapologetic colour at their core.
