The Russian polymath unveils a set of stunning visuals starring two brothers from Corsica – plus, see backstage at SS16 in a new video

Fresh off the back of his new photo book Youth Hotelfashion designer and photographer Gosha Rubchinskiy has unveiled his SS16 lookbook. Shot by Rubchinskiy himself (as is common with his brand’s visuals), the lookbook comprises of 21 photos featuring two boys wearing his SS16 collection, which he debuted at Paris Fashion Week in June. These boys – Titouan and Louison – are brothers who hail from Corsica and, like many of Rubchinskiy’s subjects, skate.

“We chose these brothers for the lookbook for multiple reasons,” he explains. “They were part of our cast for the SS16 show. Their family is from Corsica, and I think their faces look very similar to classic art Italian statues.” While the brothers’ faces may bear a likeness to those in Italian sculpture, the collection referenced a different but not unrelated genre of art: art produced in the Soviet Union during the first half of the 20th century, such as that of Alexander Rodchenko.

“The reference for the collection was early Soviet art,” the designer goes on. “Our communist artists were very inspired by classic art and used the same type of imagery. So, these boys were really in the same mood as the collection and both of them are skaters.”

The collection itself features t-shirts emblazoned with Russian typography, the hammer and sickle, his logo and the year 1984 (a nod to the dystopian novel by George Orwell). The Russian flag also features, and its colours – white, blue and red – appear throughout the collection. Along with the t-shirts there are shorts and joggers, some of which are worn, 70s-style, with vests and slightly oversized sports jackets. As for footwear, Rubchinskiy styles the collection with Reeboks and Vans worn with sports socks.

Not restricted to one form of visual media, Rubchinskiy is quickly becoming recognised as one of fashion’s defining creative voices. Simultaneously achieving commercial success while maintaining a cult status, he’s experiencing a rare Supreme-like level of super fandom. According to IDEA Books who published Youth Hotel, the book sold out in just two days – something which provides a good illustration of this.
