Last week Lady Gaga announced that she was joining the cast of hit TV show American Horror Story with a leading role in the upcoming series, but tonight in Paris it seemed she was keen to get some acting practise in before making her small-screen debut. After posting a series of behind the scenes pictures from the Balenciaga show on Instagram (and changing from a blonde wig to the dark up-do with gelled sideburns looks sported by models) the singer stormed from backstage to make an exaggerated walk to her seat, getting photographed by the waiting paparazzi and generally leaving the rest of the audience wondering what exactly she was doing.

The answer didn’t seem to be “being an A-list celebrity” – it was more “acting the A-list celebrity”. At a time when the chaos outside of fashion shows caused by the arrival of various stars can feel akin to a riot, Gaga’s act felt like a comment on the way that front row attendees can command the majority of the attention, sometimes even more than the clothes. But it wasn’t about having all eyes on her – Gaga was using her star status to big up Balenciaga. In one caption on Instagram, she called designer Alexander Wang a “once in a lifetime talent,” writing that “he is so focused, detailed, and his passion is inspiring for all of us so lucky to be around him.”
