The site usually ranks models based on a strict formula which includes the number of magazines covers, campaigns and editorials earned. This year, it's thrown open the doors to the fashion hoi polloi and asked the public to vote on their favourites. Each category – Model of the Year, Breakout Star, Comeback of the Year etc – was voted on by two groups of people. One comprised of 250 fashion insiders like Diesel's Nicola Formichetti and LOVE editor Katie Grand; the other was thrown open to public vote. The results offer a pretty fascinating split between industry favourites and social media savvier models. In the Model of the Year category, the judges awarded it to Edie Campbell. The public? Cara Delevingne. Edie has 27,200 followers on Instagram. Cara: 9.6 million. The same trend repeated itself for the male Model of the Year. Gucci campaign star Clement Chabernaud (10,200 followers) nabbed the industry vote, but Sean O'Pry (268,000 fans) got the public vote. Anna Ewers was voted the Breakout Star by the panel, but Kendall Jenner – 19.1 million followers and counting – walked away with the audience favourite prize. Of course, it's pretty done deal that those with a bigger Instagram following would get the audience vote, right? But the obvious power of social media aside, it's also interesting to observe when the industry panel and the public converged in opinion. Both groups agreed that Gemma Ward was the comeback queen of the year and awarded Christy Turlington the Humanitarian Award for her women's rights charity Every Mother Counts. And the Social Media Star of 2014? Well, both panels agreed that the award could only ever go to Cara, with Kendall as the runner-up. Sounds about right to us.
