Pussy Riot are bringing a play to the UK

Burning Doors will focus on the struggles of political artists in Russia

Pussy Riot’s Masha Alyokhina will be returning to the UK later this autumn with her first ever play Burning Doors

The show, which will be put on by the Belarus Free Theatre, will reportedly focus on the trials and tribulations of being a political artist in Russia today. According to the official synopsis, the play will follow three contemporary artists struggling under the country’s censorship laws; including Pussy Riot’s Maria Alyokhina, political artist Petr Pavlensky and jailed Ukrainian film-maker, Oleg Sentsov.

“I want this to speak about the place of political artists and political art in the world, and about the difference between radical gestures and art,” Alyokhina told The Guardian today. “The message here is the same as in our music and in our political acts. We are fighting against our oppressive governments, just now we are using theatre.”

Pussy Riot – which also includes Nadezhda Tolokonnikova – were famously imprisoned back in 2013 after they spoke out against president Putin. Burning Doors will apparently shine a light on the feminist punk band’s personal experiences, as well as the difficulties faced by Pavlensky and Sentsov, who are both incarcerated. The former – who notoriously nailed his own testicles to the Red Square in an act of protest – is currently awaiting trial for setting fire to the door of Federal Security Service building in April this year.

“Petr (Pavlensky) is the most important artist working in Russia now, and I really want his message to be spread out to the world,” Alyokhina stressed. “Also I think it is important to prove that artists, particularly political artists, can make more powerful gestures, braver gestures, and more uncommon gestures than politicians.”

The play, which Alyokhina will both write and star in, is currently under development. Depending on whether the Belarus Free Theatre reaches its Kickstarter target, it will tour the UK in July and August.
