Miley Cyrus and Marc Jacobs team up for Planned Parenthood

Artist Marilyn Minter shoots Cyrus for prints and t-shirts that will be sold in aid of the women’s health organisation

Painter and photographer Marilyn Minter has been creating art that fights for the feminist cause since the 70s. From her porn paintings of the 90s to her hyperrealist close-ups of women’s body parts of the 00s, her work challenges the commodification of the female body and its censorship. Now, the American artist and activist has got a new subject: Miley Cyrus. Minter has created a series of 50 limited edition prints of the pop star, which are being sold on Artsy to raise money for women’s health organisation Planned Parenthood.

Explaining that she has been a feminist since watching Betty Friedan (author of The Feminine Mystique) on The Mike Douglas Show, Minter told Artsy that she chose to work with Cyrus because, like her, she’s an activist. “And because we were trying to bridge the generation gap by involving a young star with young fans – she has 40.5 million Instagram followers,” she added.

“(Miley) has been famous since she was 11 and she’s a great artist, so she doesn’t care about making money – she wants to give back,” said Minter. “She founded the Happy Hippie Foundation, which supports LGBTQ youth. She flies commercial because she’s conscious of her carbon footprint. Now she’s going to help us with Planned Parenthood.”

The photographs, which are taken in Minter’s signature style, depict Cyrus posing behind some glass that’s dripping with condensation. In one, she’s sticking out her tongue, in what has become her trademark pose. The prints are selling for $5,500, with 100 per cent of the funds going to Planned Parenthood. Can’t afford one of those? Enter Marc Jacobs. He’s selling t-shirts sporting a “more risque image of Cyrus” for $60, on his website from May 16.

Recalling what motivated her to raise money for the organisation, Minter says, “I remember hearing a radio segment, while working in the studio, that detailed how officials were trying to systematically – and quietly – eliminate individual Planned Parenthood centres throughout the country by tweaking state laws so that it’d be harder and harder and harder for them to operate – and it was working. I was incensed.”

Minter, Cyrus and Jacobs aren’t the only public figures to have voiced support for Planned Parenthood. Lena Dunham is a spokeswoman for the organisation, while Jennifer Lawrence recently spoke of her horror at the shootings in a Planned Parenthood centre in Colorado Springs late last year. “It isn’t an attack on abortions; it’s an attack on women,” said in an interview with Glamour magazine.
