A Kim Kardashian mural has been defaced with the word ‘SLUT’

The street art that appeared in Melbourne yesterday has already been pelted with paint

A 10 foot high mural of Kim Kardashian has been defaced less than 24 hours after it was put up.

The portrait, which was a recreation of the reality star’s hotly-debated nude selfie from last week, was painted onto Gwynne Street wall in Melbourne by graffiti artist Mark Walls. “I instantly had the need to paint it when I saw it on her Instagram, in public, on a three story high building,” he told Pedestrian after it first appeared. “Maybe I'm as much of an attention seeker as she is?”

Given all the controversy the original image attracted, it didn’t take long for Walls’ tribute to get trashed. Within hours, someone had already attempted to cover up the image with brown and white paint, before scrawling the word “SLUT” across the bottom. See below:

Walls admitted that the attack was inevitable – adding that he was “pretty bummed”, but that it was a “given considering the subject matter.” The fact that it would be given, even with the use of such a backward insult, is a bit depressing. Are we really still that bothered about the sight of (partially) naked woman? Can we not just let it go already?

Kardashian probably isn’t that bothered by the attack. In an essay posted on her blog last week, the star revealed that she would no longer let her “life be dictated” by slut-shamers. “I am empowered by my sexuality,” she wrote. “I am empowered by feeling comfortable in my skin. I am empowered by showing the world my flaws and not being afraid of what anyone is going to say about me. And I hope that through this platform I have been given, I can encourage the same empowerment for girls and women all over the world.”

“It’s 2016. The body-shaming and slut-shaming – it’s like, enough is enough. I will not live my life dictated by the issues you have with my sexuality. You be you and let me be me.”
