Charli XCX has criticised BBC3 for broadcasting the views of a controversial men’s rights activist in a documentary which aired last night. The latest episode of Reggie Yates’ Extreme UK was called “Men At War” and looked at a number of men who believe their rights are being compromised in a time when minority groups such as women and the LGBT community are getting greater social justice.

As part of the film, Yates attended a lecture by controversial blogger Roosh V; in the clip posted online ahead of the showing on TV, the blogger is shown talking to a room of men and complaining about women, saying they’re being celebrated for looking like “fat, outer-space cyborgs” and that “women and gay men are seen as superior to straight men”.

Reasonably so, Charli XCX was angered by Roosh’s views but specifically called up that they were being broadcast at 9pm on a channel with a young demographic. “This snippet is terrifying and annoying," she tweeted. Adding: “I made a doc for BBC3 which was shown at 10:30 on a Tuesday when a lot of my audience were unable to watch. This doc appears to be discussing feminism in an entirely negative light and is shown prime time at 9pm.”

As Dazed covered last month, Charli’s documentary “The F Word and Me” followed the singer speaking to female musicians about their experience of sexism in the industry.

Dazed has approached the BBC for comment and will update the story as we hear more.
