Yet another deeply depressing encounter between a police officer and a young black teenager has been let loose on the world this week. You may remember the last one, which involved a Texas cop pulling a gun at a pool party. Well now, four months later, a South Carolina officer is doing the same – only this one is bodyslamming a female high school student and throwing her across a classroom.

The incident in question took place at Spring Valley High School in Columbia on Monday night, and was allegedly due to the student refusing to leave her classroom. Footage of the event shows the school's “resource officer” telling the girl to get up “or I'll make you”, before yanking her upright, wrapping his hands around her throat and throwing her onto the floor. He then drags her violently across the room and makes an attempt to arrest her. However, from what can be seen in the 16 second clip, it's all shamelessly unnecessary – as there's absolutely no point where the girl appears to fight back.

“The student was told she was under arrest for disturbing school and given instructions which she again refused,” the County Sheriff Leon Lott told WISTV. “The video then shows the student resisting and being arrested.” 

Although the student remains unidentified, the officer has been recognised as 34-year-old Sr. Dpt. Ben Fields – and, according to reports in the Daily News, this wouldn't be his first brush with controversy. The occasional “strength trainer” allegedly has “a history of roughing up students”, and once peppersprayed and beat a man for playing his music too loudly.

“Our District is deeply concerned about an incident that occurred at Spring Valley High School today,” stated the school's superintendent Dr. Libby Roof. “Student safety is and always will be the District’s top priority. The District will not tolerate any actions that jeopardize the safety of our students.”
