Well before you start banging on to anyone who will listen about Suicide, or Can's 'Unlimited Edition', just take a minute to think about some of the competition. Can you really lay claim to being a member of the elitist experimental Jet Set? Do you often burn down the odd cheroot listening to Pierre Henry's early fifties 'Electronic Score Based on The Tibetan Book of The Dead'? Drift off at night to the exquisite weirdness of Rhys Chatham? Whistle the occasional tune by 'Henry Flynt and The Insurrections?If the answer to all of those questions is a resounding 'no' then fear not, help is at hand. Funny Noises at Brown this month provides a space in which the aspiring 'sound art' enthusiast can while away rain soaked summer afternoons wigging out to some seriously pioneering vinyl from as far back as 1924.Curated by Justin Lieberman the show (basically a basement full of extremely rare vinyl) underlines the fact that the best environment in which to experience off-kilter aural stimulation is the second hand record-store, not the austere art gallery. Namely because the former openly acknowledges the multiplicities of the various, somewhat pretentious, ideologies being presented, without narrowly defining the space in which each should be 'experienced'.
