"My name is Jesse, and I'm accepting this award on behalf of the 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth in the United States who are starving, lost and scared for their lives right now," he said onstage at the time. "I know this because I am one of these people." Jesse Helt was also an aspiring model on the run from the feds. In 2010, Helt broke into someone's apartment and subsequently failed to honour his probation agreements, ignoring his responsibilities to meet his probation officer and neglecting his community service duties. Now the 22-year old from Oregon will spend six months in the slammer. Helt had been able to evade the authorities for four years, but turning up with Miley Cyrus at the VMAs isn't exactly low-profile. Eventually, he was forced to hand himself in on 28 August after the fugitive appeared on a show broadcast to millions across the globe. Helt met Cyrus at My Friend's Place, a non-profit organization that assists about 1,400 homeless youths a year in Hollywood. She is yet to comment on whether she'll visit. Escape the algorithm!
