Berlin is undeniably the land of all things techno, and for one week this August the Scholarship of Sound witnessed ten students with diverse backgrounds in sound-engineering, music composition and film take on specific tasks in order to learn more about the production and management of music.

With guidance from the managers of Kompakt, soundmaster Stefan Betke (Pole), Innervisions label co-founder Dixon and tech-house producer Adam Marshall, the young upstarts learned the basics in music production and engineering over seven days. With a blessing from the legendary Quincy Jones, the AKG scholarship showed ten young competitors the ropes of music production and sound development on a course that included a session in Pole's Scape Mastering studios – where methods of 12-inch vinyl-cutting were taught – while Cologne-based label Kompakt took on the task of teaching the students how to run their own label.

Kompakt initially started out as a small label releasing experimental and leftfield electronic music, over the years they've established themselves with more playful and inventive sounds across a whole range of genres. Their roster now spans 100 artists, such as The Field, DJ Koze, Ewan Pearson and Foals.
