Since it started in Berlin back in 1998, the Academy has traversed the globe, setting up shop in Dublin, New York, London, Sao Paulo, Cape Town, Rome, Seattle, Melbourne and, this year in Toronto. Split into two terms, which are each attended by 30 wide-eyed pupils, they get schooled by lecturers like Madlib, Sa-Ra, Bob Power, Arthur Baker, Benga and DJ Premier. This year the beatkids got wise to the words of M.I.A, A-Trak, DJ Mehdi, Architecture in Helsinki, Kardinal Offishall, Tony Allen, Theo Parrish and the legendary hip hop DJ, Jazzy Jay.We have chosen seven pupils from the class of 2007 who we feel are primed for big things over the next few years.
