Vanessa da Silva makes the sort of clothes that you kinda wanna go a little crazy over. Local Luxury, the London-based, Brazilian-born designer's sixth collection to date, bears all the trademarks of the instantly recognisable da Silva style, in which oh-so-delicate tailoring techniques combine with embroidery, appliqué and dazzlingly graphic illustrations to create distinctive and eye-catching fashion forms.

But if you ask da Silva, all of this talent is terribly unfashionable: "I believe in making beautiful things that are in fashion and that fashionable people wear... But I don't aim to be fashionable."

Inspired by the Hackney/Dalston area in which she lives and works, Local Luxury comprises a set of ex-dreamly wearable jumpers, t-shirts, capes and dresses, all of which are adorned with wacky yet wonderful illustrated collages, depicting a hotchpotch of hairbrushes, ribbons, antique perfume bottles, jewels, watches - "...all objects I've played with at some point or other, in shop windows in Hackney, or things that I keep in my cabinet at home," explains da Silva. 

Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, da Silva headed to London to study fashion at Central St Martin's College after a brief stint studying product design, although she regularly returns to her fashionable birthplace for inspiration. "Sao Paulo's enormous, full of life and possibilities. I look at things at a different way, because I came from there. The city gave me enough experience to decide to move to London and be comfortable here. I had some experience in 3D pieces from my product design degree, so I found the transition from illustration to garment happened quite naturally."

Folktronica band Tuung, who asked da Silva to create the cover artwork for their first album, Comments of the Inner Chorus, are fellow believers in the "amazingness" of da Silva's collages. "You seem to discover new things every time you see them," says singer Mike Lindsay  "They always seem to have a story to tell but you're not quite sure what that story means! That's a bit like our tunes."

Da Silva has also collaborated with Selfridges on the art exhibition "A Drink in Rio" and fashion label Basso and Brooke for a twenties-inspired jungle catwalk collection.

With her stock being launched across boutique stores internationally this year, one wonders what's next on the cards for this San Paulo super-girl?  "Hum, hum…" mumbles Da Silva, a soft yet distinctly Brazilian nuance momentarily re-surfacing in the London local. "An exhibition in a store in Sweden," comes the reply at last. "London gets better and better with time, but I can't say that I will be here forever."
