Empire Of The Sun

An exclusive video interview with renegade pop duo Empire Of The Sun

Film Direction by Tim Noakes Film Editing by Michael Oswald Text by Tim Noakes   |   Published 18 February 2009

Empire of the Sun are one of the most eccentric pop acts to come along in years. This is a video I made when interviewing the duo for this month's issue of Dazed & Confused. It's quite strange interviewing two guys dressed like outcasts from a Star Wars convention in a dark, empty film studio in Hendon. Not wanting to feel left out of the weirdness they gave me a spare poncho to wear for the duration of the interview. If you look closely you'll catch a glimpse. What's funniest is that, contrary to appearances, they are very serious about what they want to achieve. And, while many are keen to point out the similarities to Fleetwood Mac and MGMT, their epic MOR musical efforts seem to be paying off – their single "Walking on a Dream" has already notched up over 6 million plays on MySpace. Enjoy the trip...

Their '6 Million Plays' is a joke. They've got one of those myspace pumpers to push the plays up. Even before their release they had 8 thousand plays a day, but no comments being made, and only 7,000 friends. More friends than plays? I don't think so. You got suckered. Good music, but don't believe the hype.

Empire of the sun are the greatest I came across for years. The catchiness of their music along with the powerfull keywords they are using as well as the power of their symbolistic visuals that create this amazing spiritual atmosphere in their art leaves me breathless. They're gonna be big. I love it!

Andrew, these guys have a good vibe wave coming at us and it does not surprise me that in so many places where we don´t get the cd (like Venezuela) i´m one of the many people who play it over and over again just to listen to these guys..we´re stoked about them!..Believe the hype man
