Playing up to the era of 80s synth pop, he's fused the aesthetic aspects of the biological and the technological into his abstract and structured print dresses.Dazed Digital: The prints and structures in your AW '10 Collection seems to be quite complex... either mechanical or almost futuristic, what inspired them?Jean Pierre Braganza: I was obsessed by a track called 'Controversy Between' by Front 242, the 80s industrial synth pop sound seemed to create all of the sharp angles and psychadelic prints in my brain. It was a true obsession, I listened to it every day and the song was in the show. It was a technological demon that needed exorcising, like a ghost in the machine. The idea of technology and biology interbreeding is a theme that never seems to leave me, and although people were thinking that I was inspired by Bladerunner the actual inspiration was Battlestar Galactica.DD: Do you think it's a progression on your last collection or entirely unrelated?Jean Pierre Braganza: It's definitely a progression, as are all of my collections. I have a definite aesthetic that is seasonless and trendless, and often there are ideas that are carried from one collection to the next. They are refined and explored until I've expressed all possibilities.DD: How do you find your materials, and what goes into your decisions when putting them together?Jean Pierre Braganza: I am always pulled by natural fabrics, and black. I love to experiment with textiles, like boiling leather, distressing, dyeing. For AW0910 I collaborated with Rives paper to create accessories and made a highly complex origami belt and cuffs, the architecture of working with paper and it's clean lines provided added inspiration. DD: Why did fashion appeal to you to become a designer?Jean Pierre Braganza: I could never find anything I wanted to wear except for vintage, which I usually altered myself. It didn't hit me that I could have a career in creating clothes until I started going to fashion shows, and then I was hooked. I knew nothing else would satisfy me. Escape the algorithm!
