From Central Saint Martins to Jean Charles de Castelbajac to Bottega Veneta, Giles has worked his way across the fashion landscapes of London, Paris and Milan to become the iconic designer he is today. Having launched his eponymous label in 2004 to international accolades, Giles’ turn on the V&A stage acts as a retrospective of the past 6 years of the designer’s work, an archive of his favourite, most treasured creations. The whimsical opening of the show reflects the mood of the designer perfectly, as drama and Cinderella style music accompany his magical, vastly imaginative, almost fairytale designs. The pieces shown were chosen by Giles himself from a pool of 700 garments, and not without a difficult struggle to define the best amongst a sea of brilliance- a testament to the sheer volume and quality of the hardworking designer’s labours over the past 6 years. Indeed, the show itself reveals the masterful craftsmanship and innovation of Giles’ work, as each piece has stood the test of time both in terms of fashion and production. The V&A captured the event on film and chatted to Giles backstage about the show. You need to have the Macromedia Flash plugin installed to be able to play this video.
