Those representing to the last are Samuel Levack and Jennifer Lewandowski, an artist duo who’ve been working together since they met on their BFA at Brighton. Their broad ranging practice spans film, happenings, installation, intervention, photography and text. Their latest work, Atalanta, is part of a new 'multi-disciplinary project…inspired by psychedelia and magic’ and features people dancing in the artists’ studio, filmed through layers of coloured filters. For Triptych, their 2009 work, Levack – Lewandowski invited members of an audience to take the stage in groups of 3 to form a band for 30 seconds, which often resulted in an urgent desire on the behalf of the participants to furiously make noise. Despite their seemingly diverse output, the varied influences (anything from Punk to Bladerunner) converge creating a sense of the playful within an environment that has been created with meticulous attention to site and context. This is never more apparent than in their earlier installations, Transformation #1 & 2. The latter took place in a disused Odeon cinema in Leeds as a ‘partial remake’ of the film The Big Blue constructed from an ‘assemblage of collected, found and fabricated objects, including hundreds of ships-in-bottles, a cast-iron bath-tub, rubber masks, diving apparatus, a Tricolour flag and a French Riviera 1988 neon sign’. And with that, wish the Converse/Dazed Emerging Artist’s Award 2010 judges well, and stay tuned for the results… Escape the algorithm!
