Arts+CultureIncomingTeenage Takeover: Online FameAmy Green, 18, ponders about why so many teens want to make it big online.ShareLink copied ✔️January 2, 2009Arts+CultureIncoming An online following is definitely something to be coveted. Whether its through Youtube or myspace or blogger, establishing yourself as a notable presence has become something of an obsession for most teens. How many of us would think it was cool to be featured on the Facehunter? Or have made faces for WeKnowWhatYouDidLastNight? Or have gawped at the photo galleries on MisShapes? There are many different ways to become famous and doing so on the internet makes it no less impressive. Take Cory Kennedy, style icon to thousands of girls across the globe, she started out as an intern to party photographer, Mark the Cobrasnake, being regularly featured on his site before starting her own blog. Since then she has been on the cover of the NY Times, written her own column and has featured in two international cosmetics campaigns. 'Cool hunters' do look at blogs and party photography sites to see whos wearing what and what everyone else will be wearing in a few months. For instance, the Ray Ban wayfarers. From a few LA photo blogs to Primark. Teenagers are endless source of fascination to taste makers, fashion editors, stylists, advertisers etc and online this is easy to access. Who wouldn't want to be a part of that? With the internet, it is easy to become your publicist even when you don't really do anything of note. And we live in an age where because of the internet, we can create new, exciting personas for ourselves. We want to show our best, funniest, prettiest faces to the world and with good reason. Who knows who could be watching?Nowadays, the pressure to 'do something' starts from a very young age. 14 year olds can be found running successful music festivals or editing magazines. And if you haven't achieved these things it can be incredibly stressful, because why not? I think this is also because of the internet, it is easier to network with older, like minded people, or sell your ideas to others. If you are a budding DJ you can have a MySpace, if you're an aspiring photographer you can start a Flickr. And teenagers today are the most enterprising ever when it comes tonaked self advertisement. What it all comes down to is doing things in the hopes that someone will notice you for it and you will get to do that one thing with a lot of people paying attention. People have wanted to be famous since the dawn of time, internet fame is just a different way of doing it.Text by Amy Green | Illustration by OHGEE Expand your creative community and connect with 15,000 creatives from around the world.READ MOREWhy did Satan start to possess girls on screen in the 70s?Learn the art of photo storytelling and zine making at Dazed+Labs8 essential skate videos from the 90s and beyond with Glue SkateboardsThe unashamedly queer, feminist, and intersectional play you need to seeParis artists are pissed off with this ‘gift’ from Jeff KoonsA Seat at the TableVinca Petersen: Future FantasySnarkitecture’s guide on how to collide art and architectureBanksy has unveiled a new anti-weapon artworkVincent Gallo: mad, bad, and dangerous to knowGet lost in these frank stories of love and lossPreview a new graphic novel about Frida Kahlo
