“There is a fine line between wanting to help and wanting to join the bandwagon,” says Anita Chhiba, the New Zealand-born, London-based founder of Diet Paratha, the Instagram account and online "corner store" dedicated to uplifting South Asian culture and community. With the understanding that the best way to empower a people and control the narrative is by telling the story yourself, Chhiba collates, curates, and celebrates artists, designers, models, musicians, and creative communities across the diaspora.
Showcasing luminaries including Vogue India’s Model of the Year 2020 Aishwarya Gupta and rock icon Freddie Mercury aka Farrokh Bulsara, as well as staging innovative photo shoots Diet Paratha brings the best of the South Asian experience to your fingertips. Moving forward, Chhiba has plans to expand, bringing on South Asian talent crowd-sourced through the Diet Paratha community. Together, if they were to win the grant, they would help produce a photographic series and exhibition spotlighting the work of a new generation at the vanguard of fashion, music, and activism.
