Cary Fagan’s photography, in many ways, is a pushback from our increasingly digital worlds. Though it may be consumed digitally – the cover for A$AP Rocky’s TESTING and VHS footage for Solange’s When I Get Home was most likely first seen on Instagram by most fans – the 28-year-old is known for shooting in film, a process he has perfected over the past decade.
“We should all give ourselves time to disconnect,” the Phoenix, Arizona-born photographer who calls Houston, Texas home says. The analogue format has paid off for the self-taught artist who saw the TESTING cover be named one of Billboard’s top 20 covers of 2018 and is already working on his second photography book. (The first, Naked, was a self-published venture released in 2016.) And these accolades come only bolstered by gallery shows in Russia, New York, Los Angeles, Austin, Japan, and elsewhere around the globe.
