New face model Mona Tougaard’s recent career highlights? “Starting at Prada, which was my first major international show, and closing my season with Chanel.” Casual. But besides Miuccia’s Wednesday Addams-inspired show and the moving final collection of the late, great Karl Lagerfeld, you might also recognise her from her stomp down the Pompidou Centre runway at Louis Vuitton, or Steven Meisel’s latest Loewe campaign. Not bad for a first season.
Indeed, it’s hard to find any major designer whose AW19 line-up didn’t feature the new face, such is the appeal of this Danish beauty. Originally from the small city of Aarhus, Tougaard – whose striking look is the result of Somalian, Ethiopian, Danish, and Turkish heritage – was the winner of Denmark’s Elite Model Look competition in 2017, although she was first scouted at the tender age of 12. It’s only the beginning, but she’s off to a killer start. “I’m just proud that I have gotten the opportunity to work (in) what I always wanted to do,” she concludes.
