Philadelphia rapper Matt Ox was just 12 years old when he dropped his viral hit “Overwhelming” – and, sure, a lot of the hype and bemusement came from the novelty of his age. But that’s not to say his sound is without merit – he had early support from Meek Mill and 21 Savage, and his debut album last year, Ox, out on Motown Records, was full of cold trap beats and a catchy (sometimes comical) style.
On the subject of style, Ox also walked Paris Fashion Week at the start of this year, seemingly at ease in the cartoony gothic aesthetic of label Enfants Riches Déprimés. Looking equally at home dressed in Ann Demeulemeester and Yang Li in the Spring Summer 2019 issue of Dazed, it’s perhaps no surprise that modelling is something he wants to do more of.
Ox has plenty up his sleeve for the year ahead: more singles, his own OX clothing brand, touring, starting work on a second album and, of course, beginning high school. Gen Z are out here consistently proving that youth is not to be underestimated, and Matt Ox is emblematic of that.
