The ex-Balmain designer making minimal, sensual menswear
Paris-based designer Ludovic de Saint Sernin cut his teeth as an embellishment expert at fashion’s temple of OTT glitz Balmain, but you wouldn’t guess that from his minimal, sensual menswear.
His own label was founded just under a year ago, with de Saint Sernin using clothing to explore facets of gay sexuality. Taking inspiration from artists like Robert Mapplethorpe, his pieces are quietly captivating and undeniably erotic (hello, lace-up leather briefs) resulting in a vision that is unlike anything else out there today. No surprise, then, that after only two collections, the designer’s talents earned him a space as one of nine finalists in this year’s LVMH Prize.
Most recently, de Saint Sernin branched out into womenswear, creating a small, standalone collection. What’s next? A catwalk show, hopefully, and maybe a cash-injection courtesy of LVMH come June. Fingers crossed.
