Amid nationwide outrage in reaction to the murder of George Floyd, an unarmed, handcuffed black man killed by four police officers during an arrest incident Minnesota, a new petition calling for the arrest of the four police officers involved is picking up steam.
So far, more than two million people have signed an online petition demanding justice for George Floyd in less than 48 hours, making it the fastest growing Change.org petition ever, according to the site.
“Justice for George Floyd” began after violent footage of Officer Derek Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck for nine minutes, ignoring his cries of “please, I can’t breathe”, went viral, sparking nationwide protests. The petition is asking Minnesota Mayor Jacob Frey and DA Mike Freeman to remove all the officers involved in the murder (Chauvin was fired on Tuesday), and file charges against them.
According to Change.org, the petition has gained so much support that it’s become the fastest growing petition to date, and is still gaining a signature every two seconds.
