Known for their club bangers fusing electro and house, Joe and Will Ask? have since been working on their production skills under new management with their latest EP 'Rainbow Trout'. The new track takes a turn for the more full-on and dramatic with big-room party techno sounds alongside remixes for O. Children and Goose, keeping the duo busy. Despite having always been known for their electro house productions, the Ask? pair are usually listening to techno in their own time, with their new tracks showing 'trancier' influences and, as their mix for Dazed suggests, a penchant for disco.

Dazed Digital: Why do you work so well as a duo?

Joe & Will Ask?: When we first met, we bonded over our taste in music. We share a lot of the same guilty pleasures, both loved going to trance clubs as teenagers. We also have a similar sense of humour, regarding music and pretty much everything else. With all the travelling and time we have to spend together, it would be a disaster if we didn't get on so well. We also have slightly different roles to play in 'the band', with Will having a much keener eye for aesthetics and that side of things, and me being more of a production nerd.

DD: What is your production process like?
Joe & Will Ask?: In terms of production, generally I (Joe) start a track, and we develop and finish it together. Unless we are recording vocals, we do pretty much everything at home up to the mixing stage. Generally we road-test our new tracks in our DJ sets, and tweak them as we go, finally arriving on a finished version.

DD: You've been making music for a while, how do you feel your sound has changed or progressed?
Joe & Will Ask?: Generally, we really think our production has improved massively. When we started out, our tracks always sounded inferior to other songs by our favourite producers, but through making so much music, learning and teaching ourselves new tricks and production methods, we have become a lot better at getting the right sound. We are always trying to develop new sounds and ideas within the context of dance music. We love the tongue-in-cheek epic-ness of trance, and like to use aspects of this and contrast it with darker, harder-edged sounds.

DD: What do you try to achieve with your DJ sets? Just getting people to dance, or is it  more about a flow and a structure?
Joe & Will Ask?: It really depends on the club, but of course we always want to make people dance. Some clubs give you more freedom to experiment than others, but we always take our sets through highs and lows, and try to achieve a steady build-up, and draw people in. We play a lot of our own music now (much more than before, which takes me back to how we are now so happy with the sounds we are achieving).

DD: What's next?
Joe & Will Ask?: Our single 'Rainbow Trout / Man The Cannons' just came out, next up is a new single 'Let's Risk It' which we are so excited about. We just finished remixes for Goose, Japanese Popstars and O Children. Most importantly though, our album is pretty close to completion - we will launch it with an entirely new live set which we will tour with.
