Fresh off his debut EP Wipppps! – released on the former Dazed cover stars Frost Children’s Purple Label – the record doubles as an exercise in onomatopoeic production, with quickfire and playful tracks that go whoosh! and honk! – a synthetic sensation akin to having gummy earworms zapped into your brain. As a pop producer, Oskie is behind a handful of tracks for Hannah Diamond’s 2023 album, Perfect Picture, and knows a thing or two about creating future pop melodies. “Maybe it’s the mix my grandchildren will remember me by,” he says. “There are a few easter eggs in there, and short snippets that most people will probably miss, but it’s basically all music I like to DJ.” Listen above. Congrats on Wipppps! Can you talk a bit about the making of the EP? Oskie: Thank you! I’m psyched to have it out. It was so fun making it. Felt like something I needed to do to cleanse my mind. You’ve released the EP on Frost Children’s label. How did that come about? Oskie: Angel and Lulu often stay at our spot in LA whenever they are in town, and we would host afters, and that’s really how we all got to know each other. I remember one night Angel and I were talking about music I was working on, and she said I should send it to her. I was a bit nervous because I get shy like that, but I sent her the music and she loved it. I love her and Lulu, they are superstars. Wipppps by Oskie Describe your perfect day in LA. Oskie: On my perfect day, I’m not hungover, so it’s gonna be an early start, coffee, and get out of house immediately. Find a pool of water to swim in, maybe the sea? Then In And Out on the way home. Get home, begin a vigorous skincare routine. Spend time hanging out in my garden (I love gardening). Read for a few hours, make some music, hang out with my goated housemates. Some exercise too, for sure. In the afternoon, maybe go for a few pints, then evening time dinner and then I’ll leave room for some spontaneity. I might end the night with friends, playing the best music. Ice cream before bed? Probably. You’ve previously produced for the likes of Hannah Diamond. How does your approach differ when producing for others versus producing for yourself? Oskie: I love collaborating with my friends; it’s one of the greatest things about doing music. My approach, whether I’m by myself or writing and producing for someone else, is always very broad strokes. I don’t tend to edit at all on the spot. Just stream of consciousness stuff and let it all spill out into the computer and then hit save and return to it a couple of days later, to make sense of the mess. It’s a lot of experimentation. I love starting new ideas. What’s the best and worst advice you’ve ever received? Oskie: To be unapologetically yourself. It’s the best and worst advice. What are you listening to at the moment? Oskie: All the Purple Label crew, Sasha B, Hannah Diamond, Count Baldor, Dorian Electra, Atl Grandma, gotta shout out the homies. I’m surrounded by amazing people; they are all so inspiring. Tell us about your Dazed mix. Oskie: Honestly, I think this mix is fire. Maybe it’s the mix my grandchildren will remember me by. There’s a few easter eggs in there, or short snippets that most people will probably miss, but it’s basically all music I like to DJ. How were you feeling when you made it? Oskie: On top of the world. Perennial joy.
