On his freaky new EP Frolic, Bristol-based producer and visual artist Mun Sing, aka Harry Wright, paints his face blue and dresses as a scarecrow – just like a west country boogeyman on his way to wreak some havoc at the local crop circle. Formerly one-half of punk-techno duo Giant Swan, Wright released his debut solo album Inflatable Gravestone in 2023 on Planet Mu, which explored themes of addiction, spirituality and grief, his unexpected cartoon humour finding its way into DJ sets and live shows on dancefloors across the UK and beyond. Even Björk is a fan – the star hit him up personally to play live in Reykjavík and New York last month.

Mun Sing’s latest project takes a more frivolous approach, leaning into the absurdity of maximalist club music, he imagines a warped fairytale charged with high-energy hyperpop and Pingu breakdowns. But, just as with any excess, the fun comes at a price – the record reminds us of this, through spiralling storylines that reflect his own guilty conscience. “The EP is inspired by the complexities of having fun in adulthood. It’s about the guilt and shame that can come from indulgence and the weight of internalising these feelings,” he shares.

For his exclusive Dazed mix, Mun Sing shares a whirlwind selection of club and guitar music.

Hi Mun Sing! How’s your winter going?

Mun Sing: I’ve been on the edge of tears and laughter constantly [laughs]. So yeah, a mixed bag.

What are some of the inspirations behind Frolic? And the album name?

Mun Sing: For this record I was more interested in looking at shared experiences around excess, as opposed to quite specific experiences in my own life (which was the focus of my last album). I wanted to make a record that sounded playful and colourful, hence the name Frolic

I’m curious about all the scarecrow visuals. What’s the thinking behind all that?

Mun Sing: It’s referencing the bogeymen and monsters in bedtime stories and pantomimes from when we were kids. These kind of comical yet scary figures, which are often there to teach us a lesson or keep us on the right path. I wanted to create a similar character but for adults and our more, let’s say, ‘adult’ indulgences. I sometimes wish there were more characters and storytelling in club music so I’ve enjoyed exploring this with the scarecrow, which to me summed up this cross between something that’s both scary yet also quite funny and silly.

You’re currently based in Bristol. How would you describe the scene over there?

Mun Sing: It’s mostly great people making mostly great art. There’s lots of crossover between genres and ‘scenes’ which I really like, and a real sense of experimentation being celebrated. I can sometimes take that for granted. I think it’s a place that maybe took itself too seriously before, and we started Illegal Data because of this very reason. I think things are looking a little different now, but I don’t think it’s as multicultural as it often makes out to be. It’s also one of the most expensive places to live in the UK now, so you can imagine the effect that’s having on a place that’s already pretty white and privileged.

How important is collaboration for you in your music creation? Do you have any favourite collaborations?

Mun Sing: Yeah I love it, what better way to learn and feel inspired than working with new people? I learned so much from BABii and co when we went away to work on her latest album. That felt genuinely magical. Also working with ROOO on ‘The Hypocrite’ came together so naturally and quickly, I was kind of in awe of how much she just got it. Again, very inspiring.

I heard that Björk invited you to play with her in NYC and Iceland. How did that come about? How do you feel?

Mun Sing: Yeah, it started after she played like four of my tracks in a DJ set. Everyone was sending me messages about it, so I reached out to her. She then asked me to join her for a few shows and has been super supportive ever since. Bit of a dream, innit!

I’ve got quite a short attention span and I love a good story, so I think these are two elements that are a bit of a theme throughout the mix

What are you listening to at the moment?

Mun Sing: Cyndi Lauper, Bring Me The Horizon and Spirit of The Beehive. I’m also revisiting my favourite album ever right now: 100 Broken Windows by Idlewild.

Tell us about your Dazed mix.

Mun Sing: I listen to a lot of guitar music at home so I wanted to incorporate some of this into the mix, and use melody as a way to connect the club stuff with the more sad emo stuff. I’ve got quite a short attention span and I love a good story, so I think these are two elements that are a bit of a theme throughout the mix.

I like it when you can hum along to something on the dancefloor. When the music is so loud and the ideas are so big that you can just hide in it and let it smother you. I love that feeling in the club, so I guess I‘m trying to recreate that sort of effect here.
