Sky Ferreira has contributed a new song to the original soundtrack of A24’s upcoming film Babygirl. “Leash” will be available to stream on Thursday (December 5).

Yesterday (December 2) A24 published a short clip of Babygirl actor Harris Dickinson listening to it on Twitter. You can only hear about five seconds but it sounds great – bombastic and melancholy like all the best Ferreira tracks.

Directed by Halija Heign, (whose first film was Bodies, Bodies, Bodies), Babygirl is an erotic thriller about a corporate CEO (Nicole Kidman) who embarks on a toxic sadomasochist relationship with a young intern (Harris Dickinson.) Critics have praised the film as “electrifying” and “sexy, dark and unpredictable.”

Ferreira wrote “Leash” specifically for the Babygirl soundtrack, at the request of Reijn, who felt that her sensibility was the perfect match for the film. As the director told Vogue, “Sky’s songs are so sensual and empowering. She perfectly embodies the duality of gracious femininity and the dark beast inside, which is the theme at the heart of Babygirl.”

The news was greeted with excitement by Ferreira’s loyal fanbase, including some of her more famous admirers. Charli xcx – who during an interview last year ranked Ferreira as the only pop star she prefers over Rihanna – tweeted, “i was already so excited for babygirl but now we get babygirl + a new song from sky: omg. stan mode activated.”

As well as being Ferreira’s first new song since 2023’s “Don’t Forget”, it is her first release as an independent artist since she was dropped by Capital Records later that year. She had had a notoriously difficult relationship with her label, which stopped funding her debut record, Night Time, My Time, halfway through its recording. While the album became a critical triumph upon its release, it seems that she has been stuck in limbo ever since.

A planned follow-up, Masochism, has still never seen the light of day, which she has previously blamed on “insane obstacles” caused by her label. Even now they’ve dropped her, they are still blocking her from releasing any of the new music she recorded while she was still under contract.

Now that she’s finally broken free from Capitol, she’s entering a new stage of her career: as she told Vogue, she is planning to self-release a new song in 2025, as well as doing more live performances. Undoubtedly one of the most talented artists of her generation, Ferreira is long overdue for a comeback.
