Did somebody say brautumn?
No season is safe from Charli’s bratification: summer has come and gone, but the star has just dropped her much-anticipated remix album Brat and it’s completely different but also still brat. Despite the ridiculously long title, Charli does have a point – with totally overhauled production and all-star guest verses that (for the most part) breathe new life into a project that has already cemented itself as one of the biggest of the year, it is completely different to Brat.
While some tracks had already been released, including Lorde’s appearance on “Girl, so confusing” which rightfully sent fans into a frenzy, ten of the 16 tracks dropped today are entirely fresh. The names of the guest features, however, were previously teased in a global billboard campaign which saw the artists’ names written backwards over a Brat green background (one reason, at least, to be grateful that Lana wasn’t featured on the project).
Generally, all of the tracks here have gotten more expansive and diverse, branching out beyond BRAT’s devilishly simple hyperpop formula and incorporating elements as far-reaching as Jersey club, dream pop and 140. The lyrics, too, have been overhauled in most places, casting Charli on the outside looking in at the cultural megalith she created with the original BRAT campaign. Even with all the anticipation surrounding this project, it’s not too early to say that the BRAT 2.0 largely lives up to the hype.
Below, we rank our favourite tracks on the project.
17. “VON DUTCH A. G. COOK REMIX FEATURING ADDISON RAE”
This lacks most of what OG “Von dutch” had going for it – the infectious bass, the catchy hook – in favour of glitched out screeches and a meh Addison verse. The Skream and Benga version is better.
16. “MEAN GIRLS FEATURING JULIAN CASABLANCAS”
The Strokes’ lead vocalist gets the compressed hyperpop treatment with reimagined production that borders on chip tune. It’s interesting, but not one of the best.
15. “REWIND FEATURING BLADEE”
The Drain Gang melody king is a great match for Charli but, in an album that is full of high-octane pop culture moments, and with the remix centring around the original’s spaced-out outro arrangement, this track unfortunately feels quite interlude-y.
14. “GUESS FEATURING BILLIE EILISH”
While Billie’s verse is nowhere near bad, and the new video did go particularly hard, this track is almost identical to the original. It’s hard not to feel like Billie should’ve just been on the first version to begin with.
13. “SPRING BREAKERS FEATURING KESHA”
Kesha’s expletive-filled verse has been awaited ever since her name appeared on a BRAT bus in London all the way back in April, but ultimately suffers a similar fate to Billie Eilish. With identical themes and production left untouched, it feels like Kesha should’ve just been there to begin with.
12. “I MIGHT SAY SOMETHING STUPID FEATURING THE 1975 AND JON HOPKINS”
This remix is a beautifully stripped-back and atmospheric take on the original, but doesn’t feel very BRAT at all – more of a Jon Hopkins track featuring Charli and Matty Healy.
11. “B2B FEATURING TINASHE”
On paper, Tinashe is the perfect choice for a feature here, with Charli herself referencing how they’ve both blown up this year on the track. “B2b” stands out as one of the few remixes to lean even further into the hyperpop sound than the original but, let’s be real, Tinashe’s verse isn’t the best on offer here.
10. “APPLE FEATURING THE JAPANESE HOUSE”
The girly pop anthem goes dream pop with this feature from the Japanese House. While it seems unlikely to generate the same sort of TikTok virality that the original’s more stripped-back lyrics and production lent themselves so well to, it has got its own charm.
9. “I THINK ABOUT IT ALL THE TIME FEATURING BON IVER”
Charli going all Mike Skinner alongside actual vocals (not just weird guitar-y stuff) from Bon Iver was definitely not on the BRAT bingo card a couple of months ago. With fresh Charli lyrics detailing her and boyfriend George Daniel’s struggles in planning their future amid rising fame, it’s certainly an improvement on perhaps the most low-key track from the OG album.
8. “TALK TALK FEATURING TROYE SIVAN”
Taking what was a slightly lowkey synth pop track and turning it into an explosive Balearic house-inspired club banger, Troye definitely understood the mission here.
7. “CLUB CLASSICS FEATURING BB TRICKZ”
The deconstructed 140 pulsating beat alongside BB Trickz’ staccato vocals is even more ‘club classic’ than the original, but loses a couple of points for cutting BB’s verse slightly from what was premiered at Charli’s Boiler Room set in Ibiza.
6. “SO I FEATURING A. G. COOK”
The heartfelt ode to late hyperpop pioneer SOPHIE dives even deeper into the feels on this remix with Charli reminiscing on “all of the good times” between them. The longest track on the project is full of heart wrenching memories – “my ex-boyfriend played your SoundCloud and it changed my life.”
5. “365 FEATURING SHYGIRL”
This gloriously gritty remix has had fans salivating since it was originally teased at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Luton earlier this year, and for the most part delivers as promised, although it doesn’t hit quite as hard as when it was first premiered.
4. “EVERYTHING IS ROMANTIC FEATURING CAROLINE POLACHEK”
Framed as a ‘girl talk’ conversation between Charli and Polachek, with Charli questioning whether “everything is still romantic, right?”, this is a pensive spin on the original track. Sonically, however, it is Polachek’s harmonies over the Jersey club bassline that are the true highlight here.
3. “360 FEATURING YUNG LEAN AND ROBYN”
Released even before Brat itself, this remix still has such a captivating forward motion to it, as the three “child stars” trade back to back lines in a total overhaul of the original.
2. “SYMPATHY IS A KNIFE FEATURING ARIANA GRANDE”
Speaking of timely pop culture commentary, this one is a massive highlight from the new releases. With Ariana calling out recent discussions about her appearance over soaring pop banger production which makes the original look muddy by comparison, the “Sympathy is a knife” remix is the first true anthem from Brat autumn.
1. “GIRL, SO CONFUSING FEATURING LORDE”
It‘s the story behind this track that makes it so hard to top. From fans’ rampant speculation that the original was about Lorde, to Lorde’s text message detailing her heartfelt and frank lyrics, to Charli’s iconic declaration: “let’s work it out on the remix.” It set the stage for what the Brat remix album would soon achieve – a surprisingly thoughtful reflection on the pop culture discourse Brat generated in conversation with some of the world’s biggest names.
