If you’ve spent more than ten seconds on TikTok in the past year, chances are you’ve heard Yeat’s 2021 track “Monëy so big”, it’s unmistakable opening synth playing in every fit check, storytime and GRWM on your For You Page. The song, featured on Yeat’s debut studio album Up 2 Më, is categorised as rage, a rap subgenre combining influences as far as trap, cloud rap, hyperpop and EDM. It blew up post-pandemic (no coincidence there) thanks to the likes of smash hits from Playboi Carti and JELEEL!, and continues to flourish to this day, with Yeat taking his rightful place at the forefront of the movement.

Now, the Portland rapper, real name Noah Oliver Smith, returns with Aftërlyfe, his third album in just as many years. The release follows a prolific 2022 that saw him drop two EPs which included guest spots from Young Thug, Gunna, Ken Carson, and Lil Uzi Vert. On the new album, Yeat takes us on a riotous, 22-track joyride, featuring the distorted and bassy “Woa…!”, aptly titled “Rav3 p4rty”, and YoungBoy Never Broke Again-assisted “Shmunk”. The excessive autotune on “Nun id change” and “Back homë” recalls the 2010s heyday of G.O.O.D. Music, while grandiose strings dominate more pensive moments on “Now” and album closer “Mysëlf”. It’s a bold statement from rap’s rising star, and at just 22 years old, it’s clear there’s plenty more rage left in the tank.

Elsewhere, Gorillaz return with their eighth studio album Cracker Island, Kelora and Model/Actriz both drop their debut projects, plus Skrillex offers up yet another new record, Don’t Get Too Close.
