A decade on, the Philadelphia singer-songwriter has garnered a quiet yet impressive presence in indie rock, scoring a record deal with Domino Records and an impressive list of collaborators from Frank Ocean to Japanese Breakfast and Oneohtrix Point Never. His ninth studio album, God Save The Animals, is the 29-year-old’s most refined release to date, featuring 13 shapeshifting tracks that manage to streamline the artist’s genre-hopping sound while retaining its eccentricities. “The whole time I’m just trying to keep myself feeling something, and so if the melody isn’t doing it for me anymore, maybe I’ll mess with the pitch or add a harmony and sometimes I’ll end up liking it more after doing that,” he recently told Dazed. With layers upon layers of lush instrumentals, Alex G captures a wide range of musical styles and approaches, spanning straight-leaning folk songs to pitch-shifted pop breakdowns and early noughties rock. Elsewhere, Iceage share an album of outtakes, Sam Gellaitry returns with a second mixtape, and The Comet Is Coming are back with a rave-inspired release.
