Despite their critical acclaim, however, the group has kept a notoriously low profile. Their shimmering shoegaze sounds have inspired countless Reddit threads unpacking the mystery behind song names such as “Frou-frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires?” and “Great Spangled Fritillary”, while memes pull fun at their indecipherable lyrics. The Cocteau Twins broke up in 1998, following vocalist Elizabeth Fraser’s split from guitarist Robin Guthrie. Fraser has appeared on tracks in the years since, including for Oneohtrix Point Never and Sigur Rós frontman Jónsi. Her newest project comes in the form of a five-track EP – her first proper release in 13 years, as part of this year’s Record Store Day. The project, called Sun’s Signature, is in collaboration with her current partner Damon Reece, who has previously drummed for the likes of Spiritualized. The self-titled, five-track EP includes the rare 2000 single “Underwater” and two songs Fraser played during a solo appearance at 2012’s Meltdown Festival, “Golden Air” and “Make Lovely The Day”. The record will be completed by two tracks called “Bluedusk” and “Apples”. The EP will be released on April 23.
