Here’s what Britney Spears thought about a new documentary on her life

‘I must say I scratched my head a couple of times,’ says the singer

In the past week, three new documentaries on Britney Spears’ life and conservatorship have been released, via Netflix (Britney vs Spears), CNN (Toxic: Britney Spears’ Battle for Freedom), and The New York Times (Controlling Britney Spears). Now, the pop star has confirmed that she’s watched one of the films, and was left with mixed feelings.

Having returned from her “little break from social media” to celebrate her engagement to her long-term boyfriend Sam Asghari, Spears detailed her reaction to the documentary in an Instagram caption earlier today (September 28). “It’s really crazy guys... I watched a little bit of the last documentary and I must say I scratched my head a couple of times,” she says in the caption. “I really try to disassociate myself from the drama.”

Reportedly, she also tweaked the caption in the hours after the post went up. Originally, it appeared slightly more critical, reading: “It’s really crazy guys... I watched a little bit of the last documentary and I hate to inform you but a lot of what you heard is not true!!! I really try to disassociate myself from the drama.”

“Number one... that’s the past!!!” she goes on in the updated post. “Number two... can the dialogue get any classier??? Number three... wow they used the most beautiful footage of me in the world!!! What can I say... the EFFORT on their part.” Referencing the white crop top and shorts that the singer wears in the accompanying video, she adds: “Pssss wearing WHITE for NEW BEGINNINGS.”

The new post doesn’t specify which documentary in particular Spears watched, but she has previously spoken out about The New York Times’ precursor to Controlling Britney Spears, titled Framing Britney Spears, which was released in February. “I didn’t watch the documentary,” she wrote in March. “But from what I did see of it, I was embarrassed by the light they put me in. I cried for two weeks and well… I still cry sometimes!!!!”

In May, amid the first wave of documentaries that followed Framing Britney Spears, she added: “So many documentaries about me this year with other people’s takes on my life… These documentaries are so hypocritical… they criticise the media and then do the same thing.”

More recently, Britney Spears’ father finally agreed to take steps to end the conservatorship, two months after Spears delivered an emotional testimony to the Los Angeles court overseeing her case. Her legal team continues to campaign for her father, Jamie Spears, to step down immediately. Since Controlling Britney Spears aired, they have also since accused Jamie of crossing “unfathomable lines” related to secret surveillance and other invasions of privacy, which were uncovered by the documentary.
