Lorde, Billie Eilish, and more to perform in 24-hour COVID benefit concert

The Global Citizen concert will also feature performances from BTS, Christine and the Queens, Doja Cat, and Lizzo

An upcoming 24-hour livestreamed concert is set to bring together musicians including Billie Eilish, Lorde, and Doja Cat, in an effort to raise funds for famine relief and the donation of COVID-19 vaccines.

Run by the anti-poverty charity Global Citizen, the Global Citizen Live event will feature performances from New York, Paris, London, Los Angeles, Lagos, Sydney, Rio de Janeiro, and Seoul, raising money to benefit worldwide coronavirus recovery efforts.

BTS, Christine and the Queens, The Weeknd, Lizzo, Ed Sheeran, Burna Boy, Demi Lovato, Green Day, Metallica, Tiwa Savage, Shawn Mendes, and Usher are also among the artists set to perform, with the event going live across the BBC, YouTube, Twitter, and several other platforms.

“Covid-19 has drastically reversed the progress towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, pushing upwards of 160 million people back into extreme poverty,” says Global Citizen chief executive Hugh Evans, announcing the event. “There are now more than 40 million people on the brink of famine.”

“Progress on climate change has halted,” he adds, “as the majority of the Fortune 500 fail to set science-based carbon reduction targets. We must rectify the damage done and hold world leaders and businesses accountable for ensuring that the entire world recovers from this pandemic together.”

Global Citizen previously partnered with Billie Eilish to provide free tickets to fans fighting climate change, while Lady Gaga partnered with the organisation to help raise $35 million via her star-studded One World: Together at Home concert in 2020.

Global Citizen Live will take place on September 25. View the announcement below.
