Avril Lavigne recreated ‘Sk8er Boi’ for her TikTok debut with Tony Hawk

The Y2K collab we didn’t know we needed

Yesterday (June 21), Avril Lavigne made her TikTok debut alongside pro-skater Tony Hawk – sparking an outpour of Y2K nostalgia across the internet.

The TikTok shows Lavigne, dressed in her trademark black-on-black outfit with a striped blue and red necktie, lip-synching to the 00s pop-punk anthem “Sk8er Boi” from her 2002 album Let Go. When the chorus hits, the video transitions to US skateboarder Tony Hawk (the OG skater boy, tbh) skating a half-pipe in a matching tie.

According to the TikTok’s caption, the collab was posted in honour of Go Skateboarding Day – an event which seeks to make skateboarding more accessible, celebrated yearly by Tony Hawk and his nonprofit The Skateboard Project which creates safe and inclusive skateparks for youths in disadvantaged communities.

Meanwhile, Hawk posted a video of himself teaching Lavigne how to skate on the half-pipe, where the singer falls off the board before successfully skating the ramp. “Breaking news: Sk8er Boi singer learns skating move from old Sk8ter Man,” said Hawk in the caption.

Besides the “Sk8er Boi” lip-synch gaining 2.8 million likes on TikTok, the video quickly circulated across the internet, with fans reflecting on the early 00s nostalgia. “What in the 2003 is this????” one commenter asked, while another wrote, “OMG my childhood… Sang this on my karaoke machine everyday.”

Otherwise, fans commented on the 36-year-old singer’s appearance, stating that she looks exactly the same as when the song was first released. “Aging who? We never heard of her,” said one fan in the comments. Another wrote: “2003 Avril has been defrosted omg.”

Perhaps the pop-punk legend's next TikTok will be a beauty routine? We’ll be streaming Lavigne’s greatest hits on repeat until then.
