Listen to Caroline Polachek’s new remix of A. G. Cook’s ‘Oh Yeah’

‘That place where the brutally casual and the technically virtuosic meet… well it feels very A. G. Cook’

Caroline Polachek has shared a new version of “Oh Yeah”, the opening track from A. G. Cook’s second studio album, Apple. The remix features vocals from Polachek, alongside additional instrumentation and a “massive bagpipe line”.

“Sometimes when autotuned vocals make those flickery clusters of missed-notes,” the Pang musician explains, “it reminds me of bagpipe ornamentation. And that place where the brutally casual and the technically virtuosic meet… well it feels very A. G. Cook. So I transcribed his hard-tuned vocal solo into this massive bagpipe line to open and close the remix.”

“The original ‘Oh Yeah’ makes a brilliant centerpiece of probably the most banal lyric ever,” she adds. “So for the remix I stretched and repeated it to the point that it devolves into this relentlessly sincere affirmation, oh yeah.”

“Oh Yeah” first arrived ahead of Apple last year. The record itself — one of Dazed’s favourites of 2020 — closely followed the PC Music musician’s 49-track debut studio album, 7G.

Last month, Cook also released a sprawling mix titled Dream Logic, featuring remixes of songs by Charli XCX, Oneohtrix Point Never, The 1975, and more, and has previously reworked Polachek’s Pang single “So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings”.

Late last year, Polachek also blessed us with a stunning take on The Corrs’ 2000 single “Breathless”, which features as a bonus track on her vinyl release Standing At The Gate: Remix Collection.
