In 2017, Lorde was exposed as the owner of a secret Instagram account called @onionringsworldwide, via which she reviewed “every onion ring I encounter”, scoring each one out of five.
Her identity was revealed after an impressive investigation by New Zealand’s Newshub, which matched the onion ring posts with Lorde’s whereabouts in the world at the time. It also compared the singer’s fingers with those in the photos, and observed the account’s followers: Mac DeMarco, Justin Warren, Jimmy Mac, and – of course – Lorde herself.
After she was outed, Lorde deleted the account, much to the dismay of its newfound 21,000 followers. Well, now it’s back. On Sunday (December 20), the artist made her long-awaited return to the competitive world of onion ring reviewing, with a post captioned: “Don’t call it a crumb back…”
Since then, she’s shared a handful of posts, all of which appear to have been taken in New Zealand. One post, which features an empty box of onion rings, reads: “First onion ring in some time, from the inimitable Fergburger in Queenstown. Mates, she was a good onion ring. Great crunch, full distinct rings. So good I forgot to take a pic until the end. 4.5/5.”
Another post offers a brief explanation as to Lorde’s three-year hiatus. “I’ve got to be honest with you, this reviewer stopped ordering onion rings after her identity was leaked to the press in the great debacle of 2017. I’d get a smile and a wink from waitstaff – it got embarrassing, you know? But it occurred to me that some things are too good to let the internet spoil.”
