Grimes features in the dystopian game as futuristic pop star Lizzy Wizzy, a shiny chrome cyborg with pink hair and one of the “top celebrities in Night City”, where the game is set. Within the game, she is “a prominent artist featured on the radio frequently”, according to Cyberpunk Wiki, and now she’s crossed over into the real world to release what Grimes referred to as an “album”. The release features club-geared remixes of tracks from Grime’s recent full-length record Miss Anthropocene, as well as reworks of some classics from Rihanna, such as “Bitch Better Have My Money”, and Ariana Grande’s “Into You”. There’s even room for a reimagining of t.A.T.u’s “Not Gonna Get Us” and a mashup of Ramones and Kendrick Lemar. Grimes has titled the playlist: This story is dedicated to all those cyberpunks who fight against injustice and corruption every day of their lives! (DJ Mix), referencing another Cyberpunk game called Snatcher and it’s currently only available on Apple Music. Grimes posted to her Instagram today to say: “The cyborg popstar I play in Cyberpunk 2077 just released an album! Link in bio (Music by Grimes and friends) For now only on Apple Music cuz they generously cleared the samples 4 me 🧚🏻♀️.” The mix comes with an editor’s note, which says: “Eight years in the making, Cyberpunk 2077 has been one of 2020’s most anticipated games. But its arrival isn't just a cause for celebration for gamers. Grimes, long a fan of the sci-fi strain known as cyberpunk, voices the character Lizzy Wizzy. And to mark the occasion, she assembled a companion mix in her signature off-the-wall style, mashing together electro, hip-hop, punk, indie pop, techno, and lots more. If you’ve ever wondered what a Kendrick Lamar verse sounds like on top of the Ramones’ ‘Blitzkrieg Bop’, here’s where those two worlds collide.” Grimes has long been an active supporter of the immersive open-world game, which plays like a sci-fi Grand Theft Auto, and has been counting down to its release on twitter. She also features in the soundtrack itself, with “4ÆM”, taken from Miss Anthropocene making an appearance alongside work from SOPHIE, Shygirl, and Nina Kraviz, among many others. Her partner, billionaire space boy Elon Musk, is also rumoured to feature in the game after eagle-eyed players supposedly spotted him in the background of a scene in the “corporate” playthrough, although he is yet to confirm nor deny the appearance.
