Britney Spears ‘may be under conservatorship for the rest of her life’

According to her former estate manager, Andrew Wallet

Britney Spears’ conservatorship could be in place for the rest of her life, according to her former estate manager, Andrew Wallet.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, the attorney said: “Britney is in a conservatorship for good reason but a lot of the Free Britney people have no experience with the law. These legal proceedings are complex and people jump to conclusions. Their perception is so wrong but you can’t go and tell them why because a lot of it is confidential. You have a lot of people who don’t have a clue but meanwhile we can’t talk about it. It’s frustrating but it is what it is.”

The ‘Free Britney’ movement has been campaigning to get the pop singer freed from the conservatorship, which prevents her from making her own legal or financial decisions. Spears recently asked for a wealth management firm to replace her father, Jamie Spears, from his current role as sole conservator.

Andrew Wallet helped manage Spears’ estate from when the conservatorship began in 2008 until he resigned in March last year. “Britney to this day does not have the capacity to sign documents and make decisions for herself,” he said. “Protecting her assets is very important and for that the conservatorship has to stay in place because she is susceptible to undue influences.”

He added: “I have had people in conservatorship who have got themselves right and it has been terminated but you don’t see that because they’re not people in the public eye. Other people can be in a conservatorship their whole lives. I’m not saying that’s going to be Britney but it could happen to her.”

Jamie Spears originally became Britney’s conservator following her alleged breakdown in 2007. The conservatorship grants control over much of her career, estate, finances, and personal life, and has recently been extended to at least 2021 (although her sister, Jamie Lynn Spears, is now reportedly in charge of her trust). Last month, Spears called for her conservatorship case to be made public.
