Watch Nirvana reunite and play with St. Vincent and Beck

Dave Grohl’s daughter also came out for the LA performance

The surviving members of Nirvana reunited for a super special benefit show and brief set, with St. Vincent, Beck, and Dave Grohl’s 13-year-old daughter also joining up for a one-night-only performance of the band’s biggest hits and covers.

Taking place on Saturday (January 4), lead singer Grohl played alongside Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear at the Art of Elysium’s Heaven is Rock & Roll Gala in LA, an annual fundraiser that connects artists with children and communities in crisis.

The trio were joined onstage by a number of special guests who sang the parts of late frontman Kurt Cobain. The five-song set included hits like “In Bloom” and “Been a Son”, and a cover of David Bowie’s “The Man Who Sold the World”, which was famously covered by Cobain for Nirvana’s legendary MTV Unplugged in New York.

St. Vincent opened the show with “Lithium”, which she first performed in 2014 at Nirvana’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Beck then took the mic for “In Bloom” and “Been a Son”, which he credited as the song that put him in “the most insane mosh pit” when he saw Nirvana perform at the city’s iconic Sunset Boulevard venue nearly three decades ago. Grohl then introduced his young daughter Violet, who joined the group onstage to sing “Heart-Shaped Box”. It was the first time the group have performed together since Novoselic joined Grohl and Smear on stage during the Foo Fighters’ set at Cal Jam in October 2018.

Marilyn Manson also performed on the night, with hits including “The Dope Show” and “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)”, alongside Shooter Jennings and Linda Perry.

Nirvana’s iconic Live and Loud set at Seattle’s Pier 48 was released on streaming services and vinyl for the first time in August 2018. The 17-song set followed the release of In Utero, the band’s third and final studio album.
