Watch HAIM mash up Lil Nas X and Nirvana on Radio 1’s Live Lounge

The trio merged ‘In Bloom’ with their cover of ‘Panini’

This month, BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge has already blessed us with Lana Del Rey covering Ariana Grande and Stormzy taking on Beyoncé. Now it’s delivered the gift of HAIM performing a mash-up of Lil Nas X and Nirvana.

The sisters took to the London studio to cover the rapper’s track “Panini”, incorporating lyrics from Nirvana’s “In Bloom”. Lil Nas X has been open about interloping the melody on his song, previously discussing the rock band’s influence during an interview with Zane Lowe. “One of the craziest things about ‘Panini’ is that it introduced me to Nirvana’s album Nevermind,” the rapper said. “I’ve always seen the cover but I never actually listened to it. People were like, ‘Wow, he sampled Nirvana’, I was like, ‘no’. I didn’t realise I was using almost the exact same melody.”

HAIM also performed their recent singleSummer Girl”, which dropped last month and was their first release since 2017’s Something To Tell You. The track came with a dreamy visual directed by long-time collaborator Paul Thomas Anderson. There’s no concrete news about further releases from the group, who revealed on Twitter that they’re “releasing new music as we’re working on it”.
