The mix was recorded shortly before the tragic death of group co-founder Phillipe Zdar on June 20. The mix comes nearly two months after the release of the pair’s album Dreems, which dropped days after Zdar’s death. Group member Hubert Boombass confirmed that it is the last record to be released under the Cassius moniker, which suggests the Essential Mix might be the last of the duo’s work to be unveiled posthumously. Zdar passed away after an accidental fall from a Paris building at the age of 52. The brainchild of indisputable club bangers like “Cassius 1999”, “Feeling For You”, his influence was incalculable, shaping much of the “French Touch” scene alongside fellow contemporaries Daft Punk. Producers such as Honey Dijon and Leon Vynehall reached out to pay their respects while members from both Franz Ferdinand and Phoenix – who Zdar had worked with – also paid tribute. Phoenix noted that Zdar was an “absolute genius”, while Vynehall stated that he was “a man whose dedication to the processes and creativity of his and others' music & art are unparalleled and influential.” Listen to the mix here on BBC Radio 1.
