Missy Elliott’s nomination for a place in the Songwriters Hall of Fame was announced in November 2018, but now it’s been confirmed. She’s the first female rapper to earn the accolade, following the first rapper, Jay-Z’s entry in 2017.
Other 2019 inductees include Yusuf/Cat Stevens, American country singer John Prine, and a couple of other singer-songwriters.
Specifically mentioned in the announcement of Missy Elliot’s induction is the song “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” from her 1997 debut album of the same name, Supa Dupa Fly. There’s also a comment from Nile Rodgers, SHOF Chairman, in the release.
“The 2019 slate of inductees represents diversity and unity across genres and gender, highlighting our dedicated mission to honor music creators who have enriched our lives,” he says. “These are writers who in their time literally transformed music and helped make what’s happening today possible.”
Missy will receive her official induction at the organisation’s 50th Annual Induction and Awards Dinner at the Marriott Marquis Hotel, New York City, on June 13.
