Everyone’s fave weirdo making music, Mac DeMarco, has officially announced he’s started his own label – the aptly titled Mac’s Record Label.
“Hi, it’s Mac,” the Canadian musician said in a statement. “We’re starting a record label; it’s called ‘Mac’s Record Label’. My friend Jen who plays drums in The Courtneys gave me the name. Also there are more shows.”
The label will be distributed by Caroline, a label offshoot of Universal Music Group. Mac released his This Old Dog album in 2017, which was his third release with label Captured Tracks.
In the last year or so, he’s sold vinyl and his old sofa for charities helping Puerto Rico and a rock music camp for girls in Montreal, put out some demos of This Old Dog, and made music with a new band called Met Gala.
DeMarco also announced his first solo tour, more creatively titled the Purple Bobcat Next to River tour, kicking off right at the end of his full-band tour of Europe and the UK. The shows will begin in the United States then head back to Europe. $1 from every ticket sale goes to Girls Rock Camps, giving opportunities to young women, trans and gender-diverse young people to empower them through music education and mentorship. It’s in partnership with Plus 1.
There’s no word yet on any signed artists or releases – we do know he loves a bit of dad rock like Steely Dan, reps his contemporary Sky Ferreira, and is influenced by everyone from Ween to Arthur Russell – but you can keep an eye on Mac’s Record Label here.
