Apparently there’s a new Sade album in the works

Her bandmate says they’ve written a ‘bunch of songs’, but don’t expect to hear them any time soon

Earlier this year, Sade gave us “Flower of the Universe”, her first single in seven years. The song was recorded for Ava DuVernay’s film A Wrinkle in Time, and it came about on DuVernay’s request (“I never thought she’d say yes, but asked anyway,” the filmmaker said at the time), but it seems that Sade has clearly caught the bug for new music, as she is apparently working on a new album.

Stuart Matthewman, who plays saxophone and guitar with Sade’s band, told Rated R&B that they have a “bunch of songs” together and that “when we’re happy, then we’ll let everyone else hear it”. Given Sade’s last album was in 2010, and 2000 before that, it could feasibly be a while before we hear the results. 2020’s not that long away, right?

“The record company knows there’s no point in nagging us or giving us deadlines. It doesn’t really help the process,” Matthewman adds. “(Sade’s) not interested in the fame or any of that (other) stuff. She likes to put out art. So when it’s ready, it will come out.”

In the meantime, listen to “Flower of the Universe” below.
