XXXTentacion has been killed during a possible robbery. He was 20 years old.
Police report that the rapper was leaving a motorcycle shop in Pompano Beach when he was approached by two armed suspects. At least one of the suspects shot XXX, real name Jahseh Onfroy, before feeling in an SUV. He was transferred to Broward Health North where he was pronounced dead, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office confirmed. The investigation is ongoing.
Earlier in the day, TMZ reported that Onfroy had “no pulse” following the incident.
During his rise to fame, Onfroy was embroiled in legal troubles. He allegedly beat his pregnant girlfriend, and was arrested under further charges of false imprisonment, witness tampering, and aggravated battery. Last year, Pitchfork released police testiomy from his alleged victim outlining a pattern of abuse, while the Miami New Times reported the full extent of Onfroy’s girlfriend’s claims, including that he hit her in the face and sexually assaulted her.
In March, his album ? debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart, beating a chart record for his previous album 17, which landed at No. 2.
The rapper’s label, Caroline, told Variety in a statement: “Everyone at Caroline is shocked to learn of the tragic death of Jahseh Onfroy, professionally known as XXXTentacion. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.”
