Probably even Serch. Play LaCrate’s new album – with partner in crime Debonair Samir – and it’s all about the 17-year-old female rap phenom. She shines with fellow B-More rap youngblood Verb on “B-More Club Crack”, LaCrate pushing a dope new sound, taking elements of Baltimore Club and lacing it with hip hop so it’s slower and heavier, with a lot of gunshots. LaCrate, Verb and Mz Streamz just threw their album release party in Baltimore and wrapped up the new Ms Streamz video (check the stills).Dazed Digital: Let’s talk “B-More Club Crack”.Aaron LaCrate: It’s club hip hop or big sounding club records. Years ago lots of 12” records had the club mix. We missed that quite a lot and brought it back, however we added quite a dance music rhythm and swing to it. DD: Can you introduce Mz Streamz and Verb?ALC: With Verb, he never writes rhymes and when we record he steps into the booth and rips it in one take. Like something out of the space books or twilight zone. He’s incredibly lyrically proficient, hi-tech flows and word combos to keep the story flowing bouncily over the track. His EP “The East Side Extraterrestrial” just dropped and will be out soon worldwide. We’ve just retuned from a two week Coke tour of Germany - where girls were throwing themselves at him after his performance. Verb is ready to smash...Mz Streamz is also so lyrically tuff, yet undeniably cool. 17-years-old and so ready to make her mark. Her stage show is super fresh. Both are true raw and potent doses of Baltimore talent. Great to work with and we all share the same sense of humour. Her EP “Vegetable Money” will be out end of summer.DD: What about Delicious Gutter?ALC: That’s the Ross brothers (from Delicious Vinyl alongside LaCrate). We’re looking at new signings at the moment and about to drop the next 12” featuring Wale and Verb, the Pharcyde “Soul Flower” Gutter remix. It’s crazy. Cover artwork by Aaron LaCrate. Sooo chronic.DD: What was the Madonna track you remixed? ALC: It was “Miles Away”, her last single on Warner Brothers, which is kinda cool. It’s always great to work with Madonna, no matter how. She’s the queen of dance music. So the fact that she blessed us for a B-more Gutter remix was huge. The label thought it was too tuff, but she hand picked it herself - to shock and awe of the label. Great instincts M. DD: And cashmere for Lucien Pellat-Finet? What’s the story with that?ALC: I met him through Sarah at Colette years back in 2002, when we did the Milkcrate “Wrecking the Box” exhibit at Colette. Ironically that was the first time a B-More Club set was ever played in Paris. This was just when the internet was getting used a lot. It was almost before the internet was profitable, for sure. He came through and loved my artwork and music and commissioned me to paint his showroom gates. Which I laced and burned freestyle and we later made them into $3000 cashmere sweaters, and later, an even doper Vans triple collabo banger - the Milkcrate x Vans x Lucien Pellat-Finet SK8 Hi’s. DD: What parties and clubs are blowing up right now in Baltimore?ALC: Wow. Baltimore is so fun. Recording there with artists is the best. I always check out Windsor in Wednesday to see Debonair Samir spin and its $1 crabs. Then also Paradox and the best spot is Skateworks Friday nights. That’s the tastemaker spot in Baltimore, we just had the B-more Club Crack release party there, and it was so good. I hang there a lot. As for NYC, Beatrice, Spotted Pig or wherever I end up is usually fun.DD: What else is on your playlist at the moment?ALC: B-more Club Crack, DJ Equalizer, Shabba Ranks, new Debonair Samir, Verb, Mz Streamz, of course, DD: What’s next for Milkcrate Athletics?ALC: So much man, you wait and see.... “B-More Club Crack” is out now on Koch Escape the algorithm!
