ShiaLaBeouf Sia Letter

Shia LaBeouf reads poem dedicated to Sia at Grammys

‘Punch me if I stop crying.’

Sia may have left the Grammys empty-handed on Sunday, but who needs the award for song of the year when you have Shia LaBeouf reading a poem dedicated to you?

The star of her "Elastic Heart" music video introduced the Sia and Maddie Ziegler's performance of "Chandelier" by unravelling a pink piece of paper and reading aloud a #LOVELETTER (at least, that's how he described it on Twitter) to the Australian singer.

"I feel like this may be strange to say this here," he said. "I love you so. Punch me if I stop crying. I raise the white flag for you, defeated finally. If strength were made of broken pieces,  you and I would always win. It is though and buildings and statues wink at us. I could squeeze you to zero. I'll never know another 'what am I going to do'. Punch me if I stop crying, and I'll do the same."

Mystifying, he signed off as: "Love, Erik." Who's Erik? Well, that would be Sia's husband, filmmaker Erik Anders Lang. The pair married in August 2014.

"(Erik) wrote it," LaBeouf told Dazed. "I was a bridge. It was a way of articulating the most intimate adoration and adulation on the most un-intimate of stages. Expressing what a wonderful artist and human being Sia is. From the one person who knows her best."

"Vast promotional machines can be cozy," he added. "Love is a trading/ inheritance of stories." In the days preceding the Grammys, he had been teasing his Grammys involvement by tweeting a countdown of sorts (heart emoji tweets).

Sia reunited with Maddie Ziegler for a performance of her "Chandelier" music video, with Saturday Night Live alumn Kristin Wiig joining Ziegler in the distinctive white bob wig. As with all her performances, Sia herself sang with her face obscured from the audience (this time, singing into the wall of the meticulously reconstructed "Chandelier" set).

Dance Moms coach Abby Lee Miller confirmed Ziegler would be performing at the Grammys when she Instagrammed a picture of an Armani gift bag addressed to Ziegler backstage.

Sia, LaBeouf and Ziegler first worked together on the "Elastic Heart" video, which caused some controversy over its content (read: 28-year-old man in a nude leotard dancing with a 12-year-old).

Neither Ziegler nor LaBeouf have addressed the controversy over the "Elastic Heart" video, although Sia apologised to anybody who may have been triggered by the clip.

Writing on Twitter, she said: "My intention was to create some emotional content, not to upset anybody. I anticipated some 'pedophelia!!!' Cries for this video. All I can say is Maddie and Shia are two of the only actors I felt could play these two warring 'Sia' self states."
