The Agony & The Ecstasy this week: Floorfilling supergroups and transcendental Chicago rap
Track of the Week: Future Brown - "Wanna Party" (feat. Tink)
It's near-impossible to take this irresistible call to get fucked-up off repeat even first thing in the morning. The debut cut from Future Brown (formed of Brooklyn experimentalist Fatima Al Qadiri, Nguzunguzu and J-Cush of Lit City Trax) “Wanna Party” features additional production by MikeQ and a song-stealing feature from rising Chicago rapper/singer Tink, who we featured in our April 2013 issue. With an LP on the way featuring vocalists such as Kelela and Ian Isiah, "Wanna Party" couldn’t be more of an exciting preview.
Video of the Week: Wise Blood - "Alarm"
A claustrophobic tale of a failed robbery, the video for vocalist Christopher Laufman/Wise Blood's "Alarm" is a horn-backed harsh indictment of inner city life, and what happens when people run out of any good choices to make. This video comes just after his unpredictable recent album id, co-produced by Nicolas Vernes (Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors).
Collab of the Week: Lil Silva - "Salient Sarah" (feat. Sampha)
After their 2011 collab "On Your Own", two of the UK’s fastest rising talents conspire once again to bring us another ecstatic cut in ‘"Salient Sarah". Lil Silva’s beats can’t help but make you smile as they arouse the ghosts of dance floors from recent years, under and across Sampha’s euphonious tones. Just what Sarah does to instigate all this fuss isn’t particularly clear, but if she lures these two insanely talented gents into the studio together then it works for me.
Free Download of the Week: Jeremiah Jae - "Bad Jokes" Mixtape
Free to grab now, this mixtape heralded the news that inventive Chicago MC Jeremiah Jae was to be joining Brainfeeder captain Flying Lotus over at Warp Records. As well as his showing off his own talents, Jae brings Jonwayne, FlyLo and Black Jungle Squad collaborator Oliver the 2nd to style out the production side whilst Samiyam and Richard Prior add vocal colour and some laughs. As you would expect it's a total trip.
Most Distracting Website of the Week: pointnever.com
Maybe it was the residual hangover still hovering about as I attempted draft one of this little list, but flipping this cube formed of Takeshi Murata’s twitching stills caused no end of amusement It doesn’t hurt that Oneohtrix Point Never has once again released a piece of music that entrances, befuddles and proves his masterful ability to create compositions with otherworldly levels of delight. "Problem Areas" is the first full-length track to be revealed from his upcoming Warp debut R Plus 7, released September 30.
Thing Most Making Us Want to Sack off this Week and go Party In Berlin: Rroxymore - "FltNordf"
Free download ‘Fltnordf’ comes ahead of Rroxymore’s first solo EP Precarious/Precious on Planningtorock’s DFA-backed label Human Level. The track initially squeals pure Berlin bass, but then swiflty expands as it layers all manner of additional intrigue through synapse-enlivening rhythms, sharp samples and strident but lurid pulsations.
